Von Braun became an American citizen in 1955. He returned to Germany briefly in 1947 to marry his childhood sweetheart, Maria Louise von Quitsorp#At the age of 22 in 1934 von Braun was awarded a PhD by the Berlin Institute of Technology#When von Braun and his friends in the Spaceship Travel Club were firing their experimental rockets during the early Thirties, the German army kept tabs on their progress by sending army officers in civilian clothes to watch them#Von Braun built his first successful liquid-fuelled rocket in 1934. Compared with the simpler, solid-fuelled engine, it was easier to control and, when empty of fuel, easier to transport on the ground#The V-2 could produced 25 tons of thrust - modern rockets, such as the Shuttle, can produce over a million tons
